Teenager Praised After Turning in Bag She Found on the Ground That Contained Thousands of Dollars in Cash

A Canadian teenager is being praised for her honesty after she handed in a bag that she found on the ground which contained thousands of dollars in cash.

Kylie McDonald told CTV News that she noticed the package on the ground in Milton, Ontario, on Saturday. Inside, the 17-year-old found a number of white envelopes with an amount written on them—and the figures added up to around $30,000 ($22,500 in U.S. dollars).

McDonald said she had never held that much money before.

"It was a a mesh bag, and in the mesh bag there were a bunch of white plastic envelopes," she told CTV News. "The first thing I thought of was 'wow, this is like a movie scene,' where you walk out and see that much money in one spot at the same time."

After making the discovery, she said she called her grandmother, who came to pick her up and then drove her to a nearby police station to turn the package in.

Halton Regional Police said the teenager found the "large sum of cash" on the ground in the Derry Road and Trudeau Drive area of Milton.

In a news release, they said the bag had contained "several bank deposit envelopes with thousands of dollars in cash inside."

Police said it was clear the deposit envelopes belonged to a local business and that they had been accidentally dropped by an employee. Officers were able to contact the business and return the money.

"The teen promptly brought the cash to the local police division," Staff Sergeant Paul Davies said. "Using police resources, officers were able to contact a representative of the business and return the money. The deposit envelopes had been inadvertently dropped by an employee," he added.

CTV News reported that the envelopes belonged to a dental office and the owner was "grateful" to have them returned.

The station reported that the owner, who asked not to be named, met with McDonald on Sunday and rewarded her with a check for almost $500 (U.S. $400). McDonald said she intends to use the money to purchase the computer she had been saving up for.

"It is acts of honesty and civic duty like this that replenishes faith in the good-hearted nature of the majority of youth in our community," Davies added.

"Halton Regional Police acknowledges this young woman and commends her for her honesty and integrity." Halton Regional Police have been contacted for additional comment.
