Tennessee State Trooper Rips Mask Off Man Recording Police

A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was recently captured on camera ripping a mask off of a person who was filming police near the state's Capitol.

Andrew Golden was the man filming the video, according to WKRN News in Tennessee, as he was trying to record a traffic stop on his phone.

As the video begins, Golden can be heard telling the trooper that he is on a public sidewalk filming the traffic stop. In response, the trooper, who was not involved in the stop, can be heard telling Golden to watch his language.

"Go ahead and use that language again," the trooper says. "Don't talk to me like that."

He adds, "I'm telling you, I prefer better language than that out of you, you understand?" Golden then responds by asking the trooper if he was threatening him, which prompts the trooper to walk up to Golden.

As the trooper moves closer to Golden, he tells him that if he is impeding the traffic stop, "we're gonna have an arrest."

"Am I impeding them? I'm filming them," Golden says in response, adding that he has a "lawful right" to film the traffic stop.

The trooper then tells Golden that he does not appreciate the language he is using, to which Golden responds, "I don't appreciate what y'all are doing."

The trooper then repeatedly tells Golden to not impede the officers making the traffic stop.

As the video continues, Golden moves the camera to face the trooper, asking him why he has his hand on his gun.

"Because that's the way it always is," the trooper says.

Golden then moves the camera toward the trooper's face. "You're not wearing a mask, and you're right up in my face. Look at this. What the f*** is your friend doing over here?" he says, apparently referring to a trooper involved in the traffic stop.

Shortly after, Golden films the trooper's name tag, which reads "Briggs." As the situation continues to escalate, the trooper removes the mask from Golden's face. Golden says "What the f***?" in response, and his mask can be seen on the ground nearby. The trooper was identified as Harvey Briggs, according to WKRN News.

"You gonna do something about that? He just ripped my f****** mask off my face," Golden says, apparently speaking to the officers making the traffic stop.

After Golden tells the trooper that he just ripped the mask off his face, the trooper responds by saying "I did not."

"I'm tired of you people making stuff up," the trooper says as he walks away from Golden.

Golden told WKRN News that after the trooper removed his mask he was "dumbfounded." Golden also told the station that he filed a complaint against Briggs with the Tennessee Highway Patrol Office of Professional Accountability on Tuesday afternoon.

"Harvey Briggs needs to be removed from his position as a state trooper," Golden said, according to WKRN News. "He shouldn't be allowed to work in law enforcement again, and there should be charges filed against him."

In a statement sent to Newsweek, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security said that it "received information involving Trooper Harvey Briggs at the Capitol yesterday."

"At this time, we are in the process of reviewing the matter," the statement added.
