Texas A&M Student Runner Chance Gibson Dies in Crash Heading Home for Christmas

A Texas A&M University cross country and track runner died in a car crash on Saturday morning, while heading home to The Woodlands for the Christmas break.

The university made the announcement on Sunday about the death of Chance Gibson, who was a freshman at A&M and had just finished his first semester of college.

Gibson died in the car crash on Saturday about 11.20 a.m. local time (12:20 p.m. ET), a university statement said. No further details of the car crash were released.

Gibson attended The Woodlands High School where he ran cross country and competed in track & field events.

During his first semester at A&M, he competed in the Aggie Opener 5K and the Texas A&M Invitational 8K, the university said.

"Words cannot express the loss of Chance," A&M track & field head coach Pat Henry said in a statement. "Chance was a great young person with a bright future. He will be missed by everyone that came in contact with him."

Born to Jana and Spencer Gibson, Chance was a three-year letterwinner in cross country and track at The Woodlands High School where he was coached by Juris Green.

"Love this kid," Green tweeted, with a photo of him and Gibson training. "RIP Chance Gibson."

Gibson grew up in a family who played Texas A&M Aggies football. His father played on the team as part of the class of 2001, while his uncles Jeff Gibson did as part of class of 1999, Jonny Gibson played in class of 2003, and Dave Gibson, in class of 2004, as graduates of Texas A&M.

Gibson had one older sibling, Kara, and two younger siblings, Caden and Cambree.

"This is a tragic moment for the Gibson family, Texas A&M and for our cross country and track & field programs," said A&M director of athletics Ross Bjork.

Distance and cross-country coach Wendel McRaven said: "Our hearts are broken. Chance was a bright, funny and determined young man. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gibson family. As a coach and a parent this is really tough. It is going to take us all a while to wrap our heads around this tragedy."

"Our program mourns the tragic loss of Chance Gibson. He was beloved by his teammates and everyone who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones," Texas A&M Track & Field/Cross Country tweeted.

The Gibson family has not released any funeral information.
