Texas Man Shot to Death in Walmart Parking Lot Before Thanksgiving

Police in Texas are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred in a parking lot of a north Austin Walmart on the eve of Thanksgiving.

Investigators told KXAN that someone called 911 after 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday to report a man was shot at the Walmart on Norwood Park Boulevard, near U.S. 183 and Interstate 35. Officers found the man at the scene with several gunshot wounds.

Police tried to save the man's life before emergency services arrived. Emergency services took the man to hospital, where he died.

"The shooting did happen in the parking lot of the Walmart and did not happen inside," Austin police officer Juan Asencio told KXAN. "As of right now we don't have great descriptions. We do know there are multiple suspects."

Police said the shooting happened while the store was still open. On Wednesday night into Thursday, homicide investigators spoke to witnesses and looked over store CCTV footage

There have been several shootings in Austin recently. Only a week ago, a person was hospitalized after a shooting in the heart of Austin's entertainment district.

Austin Police Department arrested Cyron Carter, 23, in connection with the shooting, KXAN reported. He faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.

One wounded man went to the hospital but was treated, as his injuries were non-life-threatening. After the shooting, Carter allegedly took off in a car, but police found the vehicle and arrested him a shortly after.

On November 4, a 19-year-old man was killed in a shooting at Country Aire Mobile Home Park in West Austin.

Police and emergency workers found Brian Ocampo with multiple gunshot wounds sitting in the driver's seat of a black BMW that evening, before being pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

On October 27, two men got into an argument and one shot the other, police said. The man who was shot, identified as 22-year-old James Paul Fulda Jr. by police, died at the scene at the Austin Motor Inn, located at 11400 N. Interstate 35.

Texas has a firearm injury death rate of 12.7 in 100,000, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There were 3,683 gun-related deaths in Texas in 2019, still according to the CDC. Gun violence is estimated to cost the state $16.6 billion per year, according to the nonprofit Texas Gun Sense.
