Thanksgiving is a federal holiday and most offices and businesses will be closed today. Mail delivery services are either suspended or modified. Here we look at the hours of operation and delivery schedules for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), FedEx and UPS on November 26 and the days that follow.
U.S. Postal Service
The USPS is closed on Thanksgiving but mail delivery services resume with normal hours on Black Friday.
Hours of operation vary by branch. See the store locator at the USPS website for the opening and closing times of your nearest post office.
Services have also been amended because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The USPS said on November 18: "The Postal Service has so far experienced only minor operational impacts in the United States as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We do continue to have a temporary suspension of the guarantee on Priority Mail Express International destined for China and Hong Kong, which has been effective since February 10, 2020, due to widespread airline cancellations and restrictions into this area.
"In addition, customers may see delays in mail and packages destined to China as well as from China, as well as to and from European countries subject to restricted passenger airline travel. The Postal Service is undertaking all reasonable measures to minimize the impact to our customers."
USPS branches are also closed on these federal holidays:
- New Year's Day
- Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Veterans Day
- Christmas Day.
FedEx
All FedEx services in the U.S. are closed on Thanksgiving, except for the FedEx Custom Critical service.
The FedEx Express service will be on a modified schedule with "early on-call pickups in some areas" on Black Friday and Saturday, November 28.
On Black Friday, all FedEx Office locations will open by 7 a.m. local time or at their regular time, the company said.
Various FedEx services are either closed or on a modified schedule during federal holidays, including Christmas and New Year's Day. See the FedEx website for more information.
UPS
There are no UPS pick-up or delivery services on Thanksgiving, while all UPS stores are closed.
The UPS Freight service is also suspended. "Delivery service is not available unless scheduled in advance. Pick-ups can be scheduled in advance with your local Service Center or Urgent Services Department at 1-800-644-0900," the company said.
The UPS Express Critical service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Normal pick-up and delivery services resume on Black Friday.
From March 26 until further notice, the company has suspended the UPS service guarantee for shipments from any origin to any destination.
"On UPS holidays—November 26, December 25 and January 1—there is no movement of any packages tendered to UPS, regardless of the date of tender, except packages tendered for UPS Express Critical service," the company said.
See the UPS website for more information.
