The 'Tiger King's' Joe Exotic Is In Jail, But You Can't Lock Up These Memes

Tiger King was the talk of the social media town over the weekend.

The Netflix docuseries, released globally on March 20, currently reigns as the number one title on the streaming network. Meanwhile, memes of moments featured in the seven-episode documentary flooded the internet as millions of viewers tuned in while quarantining.

It's not all that shocking that the docuseries has generated an outpouring of memes shared across Instagram and Twitter. If there was anyone made to be meme'd in 2020 during the height of the coronavirus outbreak, for sure it's the show's main player, Joe Maldonado-Passage, otherwise known as Joe Exotic.

Filmed over the span of five years, Tiger King shines the light on Joe, a mullet-wearing, piercing clad, pistol-toting owner of roadside wild cat zoo in rural Oklahoma. At his exotic animal park, Joe is king. He basks in the attention from the hundreds of patrons that make the trip to take pictures with his tigers, and he is the star of his own YouTube series, which he uses to trash talk his archenemies, Carole Baskin, the owner of yet another big cat park in Florida who, according to Joe, allegedly fed her late husband to the tigers. Another character of sorts is Doc Antle, who likes to breed ligers at his big cat park in South Carolina and is romantically involved with many of the young women who work for him. Between Antle and Joe's only multiple dalliances, the series is not a great advertisement for a polyamorous lifestyle.

Between the three of them, and a few special others that appear in the docuseries, there are a lot of bizarre moments for viewers to digest, like whenever Joe talks about his music and showcases one of his homemade music videos, or any time John Finlay, one of Joe's husbands—yes, there are multiple—appears on-screen shirtless, or when the workers feed the tigers expired meat from Walmart. With such worthwhile content, it was almost expected for people to make meme gold out of the docuseries.

The memes may be the most folks will get from Joe in the interim. He's currently in federal prison on a 22 year sentence. As to not spoil the Tiger King ending, we won't give away what put him there but the deaths of a few tigers and other wild crimes had something to do with it.

But even behind bars, Joe is relishing in all the attention the docuseries has fostered. Tiger King co-directors and writers, Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin told Los Angeles Times the former exotic animal keeper was "absolutely ecstatic about the series and the idea of being famous."

"He's absolutely thrilled. I think he is trying to be an advocate for—no surprise—criminal justice reform. He is in a cage and, of course, he's gonna say that he now recognizes what he did to these animals. With Joe, we have empathy for him, but at the same time, he's someone who really knows what to say at the right moment. I take it with a big grain of salt when he says he is now apologetic for keeping animals," Good said.

Chaiklin said she could "hardly talk to him without mentioning the amount of press he's getting," noting that women were sending him "sexy bikini pictures even though he's gay" and that people were asking to see his "Prince Albert."

"He's over the moon. Having kept in pretty close touch with him while he's been in a horrible county prison, this has raised his spirits," Chaiklin said.

More than likely, he's getting a kick out of all of the memes too.
