At this time three years ago, José Urquidy was on top of the world. Now, he's looking for a career resurgence.
Urquidy was a member of the rotation for the 2022 World Series champion Houston Astros, but that was the last healthy year he's had to date. He was limited to 16 appearances in 2023, missed all of last season due to Tommy John surgery, and made just two outings in his debut with the Detroit Tigers this season.
The Tigers held a $4 million club option for Urquidy next season, but on Thursday, the club announced that it was declining the option, sending Urquidy to free agency for the second straight offseason.

Urquidy allowed two earned runs in his 2 1/3 innings at the big league level for Detroit, but fared reasonably well on his minor-league rehab assignments, pitching to a 2.91 ERA in 21 2/3 innings for Class-A Lakeland and Triple-A Toledo.
Though he hasn't thrown big innings in quite some time, the 30-year-old Urquidy made appearances for the Astros in the postseason every year from 2019 to 2023. He's got a career 4-2 record with a 4.08 ERA in 15 postseason outings, spanning 46 1/3 innings.
Most notably, Urquidy was the winning pitcher in Games 2 and 5 of the 2021 World Series, the only two games Houston won in that Fall Classic loss to the Atlanta Braves.
Detroit never truly found out what Urquidy has left in the tank this season, and while it's no surprise that they were unwilling to pay a relatively high guaranteed salary for next year, they shouldn't be totally turned off by the prospect of a reunion if one is available at a negligible price.
