TikToker Claims Landlord Threw Her Dad's Ashes Away While She Was on Vacation

Earlier this month, 22-year-old Kayla Lacara returned from a family vacation to find that her entire apartment had been ransacked and stripped bare—and she suspected it was by none other than her landlord.

Lacara, who lives with her boyfriend and young daughter, shared the harrowing tale in a series of viral TikTok posts.

"[She] took my daughter's crib, clothes," Lacara says, panning her camera around the empty room. Lacara also shows that her TV had been "kicked in" and that all the food in her fridge and pantry had been taken.

"For everyone asking," she adds, "Yeah, I paid rent."

Perhaps most shocking is Lacara's claim that her landlord threw her father's ashes into the trash.

"He just died three months ago," Lacara says, holding her father's prayer card. "She took his ashes and dumped them in my dumpster outside of my house. I found his urn empty in the dumpster."

According to UNILAD, Lacara and her family were living in the apartment as short-term renters. They didn't realize that their landlord was allegedly subletting the apartment to them illegally without the building owner's knowledge.

Lacara says that when her landlord learned from an Instagram post that she was on vacation, she sent Lacara a text message telling her she had to leave the apartment by that weekend—otherwise, she would clear out all of the family's belongings.

Lacara apparently took her concerns to the police, and claims they assured her that what her landlord threatened was illegal.

When Lacara got home, however, she suspected that her landlord had taken matters into her own hands. All of her belongings, including her father's ashes, were gone.

According to UNILAD, the owner of the building is allegedly seeking an eviction notice and plans on renting out the apartment to new tenants next month. Lacara and her family are continuing to live in the empty apartment for the time being.

Lacara hopes that her landlord will be charged with burglary, but she knows the legal process can be long and arduous. In the meantime, she has created a GoFundMe to help cover the expenses of their stolen belongings.

"I'm 22 years old and this woman took my entire life from me," Lacara wrote. "The law is doing its best to give me the justice we deserve but we're starting from the bottom, and it can take months or maybe even longer to recover our items."
