TikToker Confronts Customer Who Allegedly Told Employees to 'Speak English' in Viral Clip

TikToker Whitney (@nitwhit_ney) recently confronted a fellow customer while dining out at a Vietnamese restaurant. She alleged that the other customer "screamed" at the employees and told them to "speak English."

She recorded the last part of the altercation on video and shared it to TikTok, where it has amassed more than 103,000 views. Commenters praised Whitney for defending the restaurant staff.

According to the video's text overlay, the argument happened at Pho Saigon in Austin, Texas.

At the beginning of the video, an off-camera voice—presumably a friend of Whitney's—says that the unidentified customer was being "rude."

In response, the customer shouts: "Yeah, because they still don't f**king understand 'to go.'" She motions toward the employees as she says this.

As Whitney's friend jumps in to defend the employees, the customer cuts in and adds: "I would have been gone but she said 'to go' and he didn't get the order right." She again motions toward the employees with a drink in her hand.

When Whitney's friend points out to the woman that she's going to spill her drink everywhere as a result of her gesticulating, the customer quips back: "You know what, how about I spill it on you, b**ch."

They continue to argue until Whitney's friend tells the customer to "get the f**k out."

The customer looks at an employee standing behind the register and condescends to her. When Whitney and her friend shame her for this, the customer continues to speak down about the employees, who then hand her the order.

Finally, she grabs her food and walks out.

In the comments section of the video, Whitney alleged that the customer was mad because an employee asked that she repeat her order.

"She came in asking the waiter for Miso Soup at a VIETNAMESE restaurant," Whitney said. For context, Miso Soup is a Japanese dish.

"The waiter asked to repeat & she went off on all the Asian workers...she was threatening the employees," Whitney continued. "She was SCREAMING at them to 'speak English' which they did very well, btw," Whitney added.

The alleged comments were not captured on video.

Newsweek reached out to Whitney for further comment but did not hear back in time for publication.

Axios recently reported that "[r]estaurants and bars are still about 1 million jobs short of pre-pandemic levels." According to the outlet, two-thirds of restaurant workers claim that this shortage is largely due to "customer behavior."

A former bartender from West Virginia told Axios Today: "I was extremely lucky to work in a place where the employer treated the employees well and everyone made excellent money. [Customers] did make me quit.

"What really hurts is that the same people whining about people on unemployment were the same people who would come in and treat the people actually working like [crap]," she continued.

Many commenters on Whitney's post praised her and her friend for defending the Pho Saigon's employees.

"Thank you for standing up for the server," said one commenter.

"That's my favorite restaurant," added Atxpoddle. "The staff are always on point and the owner is super sweet, which I would have been there to defend them."

"No, that's my fav place," said Corinne. "Thank[s] for helping."
