'Just Stop With This Craziness': Tim Ryan's Speech Against Kevin McCarthy Viewed 1 Million Times

Tim Ryan's explosive speech against House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy's comments on face masks has been viewed more than 1 million times as the Ohio representative was widely praised on social media for his remarks.

During a speech on Wednesday, Ryan spent his allotted time speaking about Republican lawmakers who had criticized Capitol physician Brian Monahan after he announced that face masks would be required again in the House amid the spread of the contagious Delta variant of COVID-19.

Monahan confirmed that representatives would have to wear masks in the House side of the Capitol in a memo on Tuesday after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that it was now recommending that even vaccinated people wear masks in high-risk areas.

Ryan pointed out that some House members could be traveling to the Capitol from areas badly affected by the Delta variant and said that although he "may not be from a hot spot," others would be traveling from one.

The Ohio representative added: "Look, the attending physician of the United States Capitol, the top doctor for Congress, asks us to put on masks when we come to a chamber with 435 people.

"I hate these things. Absolutely. It was terrible having to put this back on. And we do it because the top doctor for all of us asked us to."

Ryan then took aim at McCarthy, a California representative who earlier in the day had said that the mask mandate should not apply to the House, arguing that around 85 percent of its members had been fully vaccinated.

McCarthy also tweeted: "Make no mistake—The threat of bringing masks back is not a decision based on science, but a decision conjured up by liberal government officials who want to continue to live in a perpetual pandemic state."

Responding to McCarthy's comments in his speech in the House on Wednesday, Ryan said that his remarks were "immature" and "beneath" a leader of Congress.

Today Minority Leader McCarthy gave a low rent and juvenile speech dragging us for wearing masks to keep our loved ones safe. You can always count on him to take the low road.

"I just find it absolutely immature and appalling to somehow diminish it, try to score cheap political points. And that's exactly what we saw a few minutes ago," Ryan said.

"Just stop with this craziness. We're trying to be safe, trying to protect our family members, our kids, our parents, close relatives, and the Minority leader mocks that.

"That is beneath a Minority leader of one of the major political parties in the United States of America, saying we should take no caution that someone from a hot spot is working in this chamber and could potentially get someone infected that could go home to a sick parent or immune-compromised kid. That is beneath us."

Ryan posted a three-minute clip of his speech to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, captioning the footage: "Today Minority Leader McCarthy gave a low rent and juvenile speech dragging us for wearing masks to keep our loved ones safe. You can always count on him to take the low road. My message for him: Just Stop."

The clip has now been viewed by more than 1 million people on Twitter after it was shared by several media outlets and the video gained traction as multiple people praised Ryan for his speech.

Political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen responded to the speech writing: "@TimRyan does it again," and former basketball player Rex Chapman added: "If you don't do anything else today please watch these three-minutes from Tim Ryan on masks."

Chapman also tweeted: "Tim Ryan stuffed Republicans and Kevin McCarthy's a**es into a locker just now." Democratic strategist Adam Parkhomenko wrote that "Tim Ryan is f*****g done with the GOP."

Newsweek has contacted representatives of Ryan and McCarthy for comment.
