Today's Wordle Word #405 Answer, Hints and Clues - Friday, July 29

It's a new day and a new challenge has been set for Wordle players, those who have by now proven that their love for the online word-guessing game goes beyond the collective enthusiasm that took over the world in December 2021.

The game, in which players have six tries to discover a five-letter word, was originally created by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle for his puzzle-loving partner, but it soon became a global phenomenon played by millions of people.

The New York Times bought it in January for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, amid backlash from the public worried that the acquisition would change the game or that Wordle would become unaccessible beyond the newspaper's paywall. But the New York Times decided to leave it free for all people, and the game remains unchanged.

You can play the game here.

The answer to Wordle #405 can be found at the bottom of this page. So, if you just want a few hints to help you with the July 29 word or general advice on how to play, but want to avoid the big spoiler, scroll down carefully.

Every Wordle player has a different technique. Maybe you start every day's puzzle with the same word, either your lucky one or what you've found to be the best combination of vowels and consonants. Or maybe you start at random, letting each day inspire you with a new word.

Wardle has recommended that you try to eliminate as much of the alphabet as possible in the lowest number of tries, so watch out for accidentally repeating the same letters. You can try to use as many vowels as possible —AUDIO is a good word for it— or use consonants that are common in everyday speech (avoid X, Q and Z).

However you approach the game, these hints will help you get the answer.

Hint #1: The word starts with the letter "U"

Hint #2: Today's Wordle contains two vowels

Hint #3: It ends with the letter "T"

Hint #4: The word means to feel unhappy, disappointed or worried

'Wordle' #405 Answer for Friday, July 29

The answer to Wordle #405 is "UPSET." And that's how we felt when we could not get the answer in less than 5 tries. The word is a verb, a noun and an adjective, but its meaning doesn't differ much between the three.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as a verb that means "to force out of the usual upright, level, or proper position" and "to trouble mentally or emotionally." It gives the example of "the news upset me," a statement you can probably relate to after the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and now the fears of a recession.

The word also means "an act of throwing into disorder," "a minor physical disorder," and "an emotional disturbance" as a noun.

Wordle updates every day at 7 p.m. ET, so it won't be long until you can have another go. While you're waiting for the game to refresh, why not try another online brainteaser, such as the geography guessing game Worldle or one of these word puzzles?

If you're a cinema lover, you can try this game.
