All of the Tony Awards 2021 Winners

Almost one year after the 2021 Tony Award nominations were announced, the lavish ceremony has finally taken place. The evening saw Broadway's biggest stars take to the red carpet and celebrate the best shows on the American stage. The night was bigger and brighter than ever, particularly after a dark time for Broadway and theaters across the world thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. Newsweek has the full list of Tony Award 2021 winners.

The biggest winner of the night was Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the stage adaption of Baz Luhrmann's 2001 Oscar-winning musical.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical took home 10 Tony Awards, including the coveted Tony for Best Musical, becoming the first Australian-produced show to win the special award.

Accepting the award for Best Musical, producer Carmen Pavlovic said: "It feels a little odd to me to be talking about one show as 'best musical', I feel that every show of last season deserves to be thought of as best musical."

Danny Burstein won Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his portrayal of Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

The success continued for the show with Aaron Tveit winning the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical.

Derek McLane took home the Tony for Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Catherine Zuber won for Best Costume Design of a Musical.

Moulin Rouge! also won the Tony for Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography, and finally, Best Orchestrations.

Matthew Lopez's Broadway transfer of The Inheritance, a seven-hour play (split into two parts), about the Aids epidemic won the Tony for Best Play, making him the first Latino writer to take home the award.

Accepting the award for best play, Lopez called for more Latino creatives to be on the main stage, stating his community are "underrepresented on Broadway" vowing "this must change."

"We are a vibrant community reflecting a vast array of experiences and, yes, skin tones. Let us tell you our stories," he added.

Two other big winners of the night were Andrew Burnap and Mary-Louise Parker.

Burnap won the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his portrayal of Toby Darling in The Inheritance.

Parker won the Tony for her performance as Yale creative writing professor Bella Baird in The Sound Inside, her second Tony award in 20 years.

Adrienne Warren took home the Tony for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical for her performance as the legendary Tina Turner in Tina – The Tina Turner Musical.

Sadly, Slave Play, which had 12 nominations, left the awards ceremony empty-handed.
