The Department of Education is reportedly set to cut off over 800 rural schools after deciding to enforce a specific poverty reporting rule for the first time in close to 17 years.

On Thursday, Democratic Representative Katherine Clark slammed Education Secretary Betsy DeVos at the President's 2021 Education Budget Request hearing, telling DeVos that she "should resign."

Warren criticized DeVos for her lack of experience in education during her confirmation hearing and has repeatedly called for an education secretary who previously worked as a public school teacher.

"Given that Liberty's violations are public and longstanding, we are left to conclude that the Department's failure to act is deliberate and that it is only interested in enforcing free speech policies against institutions it deems unfriendly," Reps. Levin and Raskin wrote in a letter.

On Monday, a judge told the courtroom that she wasn't sending anyone to jail yet for violating her order, but was glad to know it was an option.

The lawyer representing defrauded students told Newsweek a U.S. magistrate judge is unlikely to follow through on her threat of jail time but argued that the education secretary's actions constitute "extraordinary noncompliance."

"There have to be consequences for violation of my order sixteen thousand times," U.S. Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim said at a hearing on Monday.

"One of my education promises is I will not appoint anyone to be Secretary of Education who has not taught in a public school," Warren told voters in Michigan on Tuesday.

"I'll just be blunt: Betsy DeVos is the worst Secretary of Education we've seen," the campaign email read, while promising to nominate an education secretary with "real teaching experience."

When the education secretary is outside Washington, she is an advocate for reading. Once back inside the Beltway, she ducks into a backroom and champions radical cuts.

"It's important that adults have adult disagreements on adult time, and that they not ultimately hurt kids in the process,' Secretary of Education Betsy Devos said.

"It is unacceptable, shameful and counterproductive that the media and some members of Congress have spun up falsehoods and fully misrepresented the facts," DeVos wrote in a statement on Wednesday.
