With no clear path to resolving their Eastern Mediterranean dispute, Greek officials seek a stronger U.S. role, while their Turkish counterparts want Washington to stay neutral as both sides blame each other for the worsening feud.
Turkey is involved in conflicts in Syria, Libya and between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but has of far avoided a direct clash with fellow NATO member Greece over energy reserves in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Greek doctor reportedly noted "nobody responded in the 24 hours the invitation was published" on social media.
The cruise began in Heraklion, the capital of the Greek island of Crete, and was due to sail to Piraeus, near Athens.

While some European nations have already announced plans to allow international visitors in the coming month, others have only committed to being open to visitors from within the Schengen zone.

The 31-year-old had suffered from blurred vision for almost a month before she visited the E.R.
"It's the perfect space for a situation to become catastrophic," said Apostolos Veizis, the director of MSF's medical operational support unit in Greece.
Brutal clashes have unfolded at the Turkish-Greek border as thousands of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees seek to enter Greece.
The Greek government has branded the claim "fake news."
After Ankara suggested it would not prevent migrants and refugees from leaving Turkey, thousands of refugees have headed toward the border with Greece.
The plan comes after the UNHCR called on Greece's government to take action to address overcrowding and poor conditions at refugee camps.
"It's a great honor for me. I am thrilled, and I think the feelings will get even more intense in Ancient Olympia," Korakaki said.
The majority of those who come to Greece seeking asylum genuinely "need international protection," said Boris Cheshirkov, the United Nations Refugee Agency's (UNHCR) spokesperson for Greece.
Greece's islands are struggling with severe overcrowding, with 36,000 people spread across five reception centers collectively meant to shelter 5,400, according to the UNHCR.
Archaeologists have found two Bronze Age tombs on the Greek mainland, filled with gold and treasure.
Greece is the guardian of "the borders of the West," Giorgos Koumoutsakos, the country's immigration minister, told Newsweek.
Researchers also found three almost intact World War II wrecks, including two ships and a plane.
U.S. Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt also acknowledged that the U.S. has a "significant relationship" with China.
Greece is expected to seek NATO's support in its growing tensions with Turkey.
Asylum seekers also received their rejection letters in a language they may not understand.
"We don't see how converting the centers into prisons represents a solution," said MSF spokesperson Tommaso Santo.
Underwater archaeologists also found four other shipwrecks dating from several different historical periods.
