"They are treating us like animals," one immigration detainee at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center told immigration advocates.

The administration's latest immigration policies are not only cruel and useless against the pandemic: the may actually exacerbate the COVID crisis.

ICE's contract with JHU expired on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the immigration agency said.

"The evidence will bear out what happened as we proceed with the legal process," said attorney Michelle Simpson Tuegel.

Around 880lbs of methylamphetamine was found inside 738 bottles shipped to Sydney from U.S last October.

The FBI and DEA also saw a drop in criminal referrals during the same time.

"POEs [ports of entry] and Border Patrol stations have capacity only for short-term processing and holding of inadmissable aliens," the order states.

Choung Woong Ahn was convicted of attempted murder in June 2013. He had been facing deportation from the U.S. before his death.

"We are not a country that believes in tearing babies away from their parents," said Families Belong Together chair Jess Morales Rocketto.

My clients in immigration detention tell me it feels like being a dog in an animal shelter, not knowing if their neighbor was adopted or euthanized.

"The government cannot say it did not know this would happen," said Dr. Ranit Mishori, senior medical advisor at Physicians for Human Rights.

Detainees held at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center have said they are afraid of contracting COVID-19 at the detention facility.

"I'm just really worried every day about what goes on," one detainee at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center said.

Nearly 700 immigration detainees have been released from custody nationwide amid the pandemic.

"They didn't have to die," immigration activist and Families Belong Together co-director Paola Luisi said.

Only 1.38 percent of all ICE detainees have been tested for coronavirus out of a total nationwide population of 30,307 detainees, according to information released Tuesday.

So far, nearly 300 detainees nationwide have contracted COVID-19, according to ICE data.

Lisette Santis, a 40-year-old undocumented immigrant from Guatemala, faces a felony charge and will likely be deported after allegedly intentionally spitting guava fruit into produce bins at a Walmart store.

"We've got to keep Donald Trump in office in 2020," former ICE acting director Thomas Homan wrote.

The U.S. wants to "review and validate" Guatemala's claims before taking action.

"Detainees who are elderly or who may otherwise be uniquely vulnerable to the worst effects of COVID-19 are of particular concern," read the Tuesday letter in part.

ICE is working with the State Department to bring U.S. citizens and permanent residents back to the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

ICE said allegations of how detainees were treated during the exchange were "extremely exaggerated."

Five ICE workers at detention facilities have also tested positive for COVID-19.

The roughly 40 people on board the deportation flight have been forced to go into quarantine.

A total of 64 U.S. citizens were on board the return leg of an ICE removal flight on Wednesday.

Rights groups claim some ICE detention centers have not provided detainees with any information about COVID-19, so they may not know the symptoms or how to protect themselves.

An ICE detainee has also tested positive for coronavirus.
