Over 800 million animals have died in New South Wales alone, according to the University of Sydney.
The animal likely became a meal for a roaming wolf, even though no remains were discovered.
Short-faced kangaroos are an entirely extinct group of marsupial herbivores that arose during the Miocene Epoch—around 23 to 5.3 million years ago—and diversified prolifically during Australia's Ice Age.
Around 3,200 of the two-legged marsupials will be put down in the next three months.
It hops like a kangaroo but spends most of its time underground.
