"Trying to change gender identity is dangerous, and affirming gender identity is protective," Dr. Jack Turban, lead author of the study, told Newsweek.
Almost 100 so-called fetal "heartbeat" bills have been introduced across 25 U.S. states since 2011.

The study co-author told Newsweek the findings give "strong support for providing gender-affirming care to transgender individuals who seek them."
"It is clear conversion therapy targeting people who are LGBT is rooted solely in discrimination and hate without any scientific evidence," one expert told Newsweek.
The debunked practice is currently only banned for minors in 18 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., while adults can legally be offered the service in all states and jurisdictions.

"Dangerous and homophobic literature should be kept off the Amazon platform in the best interest of the safety of the public," Dr. Natasha Bhuyan told "Newsweek."

The bill also could be used against single parents and divorcees, warned advocacy groups.
