Crime statistics show that homicides are up in big cities, including New York, Philadelphia and Chicago, as well as smaller cities like Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The New York Police Department reported 777 shootings in 2020 through August 1, totaling more victims and incidents than 2019 in its entirety.
"To not protect our rights is to give them away," said New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
A clip of the protester being arrested has been viewed more than six million times online.
The NYPD said she was wanted for damaging police cameras, but some on Twitter took issue with the way the police framed the situation.
"We are ... providing an unprecedented picture of civilians' complaints of abuse by NYPD officers as well as the limits of the current system that is supposed to hold officers accountable," a website editor wrote.
The city is continuing to see a significant increase of gun violence incidents compared to 2019.
Among the wounded officers was NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan, who suffered an injury to his hand.
"It is a troubling trend that we are closely monitoring," an NYPD spokesperson said.
NYPD told Newsweek it is aware of the video and it is under review.
"The vehicle fled the location but was stopped a short distance away," according to New York City's police.
Republicans must embrace law and order and paint a stark contrast with the Democrats.
New York City lawmakers have approved a 2021 budget that will see $1 billion slashed from NYPD funding.
Protesters in lower Manhattan's "City Hall Autonomous Zone" had set up a "No Pig Zone" as part of their calls for the city to defund or abolish the NYPD.
The latest budget cuts around $1 billion from the NYPD budget, following calls to "defund the police" during widespread protests.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called the proposed $1 billion cut to the NYPD budget "a disingenuous illusion."
This budget prioritization has never reflected our city's needs: The Department for the Aging receives less than one half of 1 percent of the city's budget, despite serving almost 20 percent of New York's population.
"NYPD cops will strike on July 4th to let the city have their independence without cops," declared a flyer reportedly being circulated amongst officers.
Approximately 2,500 prisoners were released from Rikers Island due to the concerns over the novel coronavirus. Of those, 250 have been arrested 450 times since their release.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea acknowledged there were some "bad incidents" and vowed to hold officers who act inappropriately accountable.
The NBA Hall of Famer rebuked Mark O'Meara, who had warned it was time to stop "vilifying" officers in the wake of George Floyd's death.
"Our legislators abandoned us," New York Police Benevolent Fund President Mike O'Meara said Tuesday. "The press is vilifying us."
"First he threw my phone and then he threw me," protester Dounya Zayer said about the incident.
"The NYPD is exactly the wrong agency to be endowed with the critical task of safeguarding our rights as New Yorkers," Comptroller Scott Stringer said.
"Our office has a moral imperative to enact public policies which assure all New Yorkers that in our justice system and our society, black lives matter and police violence is a crime," the D.A.'s Office said Friday.
The suspect was taken to hospital in critical condition after a sergeant responded to the scene and opened fire.
A spokesperson for the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information said in a Tuesday statement to Newsweek, "Confirmed police involved shooting unrelated to protests/looting."
