Patrick Leahy is retiring after eight terms in the U.S. Senate, giving Vermont the chance to fill a Congressional seat for the first time since 2006.
In 2018, Sanders won re-election to the U.S. Senate, and in 2019, he filed for re-election to the Senate in 2024.

Just over two decades ago, a dozen senators were already serving in the Senate during former President Bill Clinton's impeachment trial.
It's unclear what ails the 80-year-old senator, but he was set to oversee Trump's second impeachment trial in place of Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.
