More than 874,000 Ukrainians have already escaped to neighboring countries since the Russian invasion began early last Thursday.

Nearly 875,000 people have fled Ukraine into neighboring countries after Russia launched its invasion last week.

"It always becomes harder and harder for the people who are left behind, and the local economy is also imploding, so everything becomes more difficult," an official from Save the Children told Newsweek.

Checkpoints at the borders of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and other nations were clogged by long lines of cars and buses as Ukrainians pour out of the country.

African students trapped in the country have taken to social media to document the hurdles and hostility they have faced while trying to get to safety.

"It's clear we need to invest more in the security of our country, in order to protect our freedom and our democracy," German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.
