At approximately 4:30 p.m. local time, the Seattle Police Department declared Saturday afternoon protests a riot, due to a fire at a construction site and smashed windows at local businesses.
The directive for officers not to use tear gas which is set to go into effect on Saturday, July 25, but the DOJ says it violates a 2012 federal agreement with Seattle police.
"DHS now says they have a limited number of agents in the area on standby to protect federal buildings," Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan wrote.
"We don't work in concert with government," said Seattle Times executive editor Michele Matassa Flores.
