Social media users suggested Puerto Rico should replace Texas as a state after the Texas GOP called for a referendum on possible secession from the U.S.
In 1868, the Supreme Court ruled on a case about Texas and secession from the United States, saying that union was "indissoluble."
The Texas GOP's platform calls for a referendum so Texans can vote on "whether or not the State of Texas should reassert its status as an independent nation."
The constitutional amendment that would have led to the state's secession from the rest of the country was defeated 323-13, with 13 Republicans supporting it.
