More than 153,000 Ford Ranger trucks in the 2004 to 2006 model years were recalled over potentially dangerous air bags on Thursday, along with thousands of other Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.

About 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles were recalled for airbag replacements.

The company's products contained elements that became volatile with age and heat exposure.

Honda said that the rupture occured in the passenger-side air bag.

In total, 15 automakers have recalled nearly 16.4 million U.S. vehicles with Takata air bags since last week.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cited ammonium nitrate as a factor that caused seven deaths.

Takata also faces an additional $130 million in fines if it violates the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration settlement.

The deadly air bags could deploy with too much force and spray metal fragments inside vehicles.

Recalls have already been issued for 17 million vehicles at the regional level.

A federal grand jury subpoenaed Takata's U.S. unit to produce documents related to air bag defects, a spokesman said.
