The emergency order has been branded "unlawful, invalid, and unenforceable" after a challenge was taken to Wisconsin's Supreme Court.

Tony Evers said Wisconsin had been thrown into "chaos" by four judges as coronavirus lockdown restrictions no longer applied in the state.

In its Wednesday ruling, the Wisconsin Supreme Court called the extension of the orders "unlawful, invalid and unenforceable."

The presumptive Democratic nominee currently appears to be ahead in Wisconsin, Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and the traditionally Republican state of Arizona.

This is the second major Wisconsin election that has been thrust into the national spotlight in recent weeks.

Perez tweeted Monday that Karofsky's victory was "a result that speaks to Democrats' incredible enthusiasm and should terrify Donald Trump, and every other Wisconsin Republican."

Voters were forced to choose between participating in our democracy and protecting their own health and the health of their community. This can never happen again.

"No one should be forced to choose between their right to vote and their right to stay healthy like the debacle in Wisconsin this week," Obama tweeted Friday.

Trump narrowly beat Hillary Clinton in several battleground states that Obama had won in 2008 and 2012. Democrats aim to win back these states in 2020.

"I'm surprised Wisconsin took this risk, knowing they don't have to," said former GOP Rep. Charlie Dent.

"We are listening to our people and, you know, we've got to make the best decision that we can," the progressive senator from Vermont said.

Milwaukee is operating five in-person voting locations despite having nearly 290,000 registered voters.

The Supreme Court is "undermining our democracy," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

The U.S. Supreme Court also blocked an effort to extend absentee voting until April 13. Both decisions were reached by each court's conservative majority.

"The bottom line is that I have an obligation to keep people safe, and that's why I signed this executive order today," Governor Evers said Monday.

All ballots already cast will remain valid and tallied, the Wisconsin governor said. A federal judge has determined that absentee ballots will be accepted until April 13 at 4 p.m.

The state has called in National Guard troops to staff polling sites, as thousands of workers are expected to not show up because of the coronavirus outbreak.

"We should not be allowing poll workers and voters to congregate on April 7," U.S. District Judge William Conley said.

The state recorded more than 21,000 initial claims on Monday, almost 20,000 more than the same day last year.

Austin Schroeder, 26, of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, and his girlfriend, Kaitlin Geiger, 21, are accused of selling drugs from their apartment.
