Tornado Photos, Videos Show Newnan High School Severely Damaged

The city of Newnan, Georgia, was battered by a storm on Thursday night, with Newnan High School particularly badly damaged by high winds.

Meteorologists and residents of Newnan, which is around 40 miles southwest of Atlanta, shared photos and videos of the damage to the school on social media.

Radek Przygodzki, meteorologist for ABC News WTVM, posted a video on Twitter and wrote: "Significant structural damage near Newnan high school."

Nicole Phillips, weather reporter for WRBL News 3, shared a photo, taken by Randy Robbins, of the extensive damage to the high school's gym.

WSB-TV anchor Justin Wilfon reported that police officers said the high school had a gas leak and houses had been "torn up."

Newnan police have all major streets leading into the worst of the damage zone blocked off. Officer tells me houses are torn up, high school has a gas leak. ⁦

CBS journalist Sabrina Silva also shared a video of the damage to the school, writing: "Crews tell me they've never seen a storm cause this much damage here."

Newnan residents have been urged to stay at home and to avoid driving to see the damage. The high school has announced that it will remain closed today.

In the early hours of Friday morning, the City of Newnan said: "The city experienced heavy damage in and around the historic downtown area due to tonight's weather.

"Please note that both the city and county crews are in route and working on scene to clear impacted areas. Please remain safe in your homes and take shelter. Stay safe!"

Newnan High School wrote on Twitter: "Due to extensive storm damage in many areas of our county, Coweta County School System will be closed on Friday, March 26, 2021. School will be closed for students and staff."

The city's police department issued a statement on Facebook, writing: "Please…get off the road in Newnan. We have a large amount of damage to include trees down and powerlines down. By you being out driving and sightseeing, It is impeding our efforts to get to people that need help."

The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina on Thursday, and parts of those southern states were hit by several tornadoes.

NWS Atlanta has also warned locals: "Significant portions of north GA are currently under Flash Flood Warnings.

"Please, do not drive into or through flooded roadways. We have been getting numerous reports through the night of water rescues occurring from driving into flooded roadways. Turn Around Don't Drown!"

More than 19,000 energy customers in Georgia are currently without power. There are more than 3,000 power outages in Coweta County, where Newnan is located.
