Frito-Lay is voluntarily recalling a limited number of Tostitos tortilla chips due to the potential presence of undeclared milk, which could pose a risk to individuals with dairy allergies.

Why It Matters

Numerous recalls have been initiated so far this year due to damaged products, the potential of foodborne illness, undeclared food allergens, or the potential of bacteria.

Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or food allergies every year. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the nine "major" food allergens in the U.S. are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, Crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts and peanuts.

What to Know

The recall affects fewer than 1,300 bags of 13-ounce Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips that may actually contain nacho cheese-flavored chips made with milk. The company emphasized Wednesday that no allergic reactions have been reported so far. However, it warned that those with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity should avoid consuming the chips and discard them immediately.

The affected products were distributed to select retailers in 13 states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Consumers may have purchased the chips beginning March 7, and all impacted bags carry a "guaranteed fresh" date of May 20.

Frito-Lay, based in Plano, Texas, is a subsidiary of PepsiCo.

The products were distributed to grocery, club and convenience stores in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

In July 2021, Frito-Lay voluntarily recalled a limited number of 7 3/4 oz. bags of Wavy Lay's Original Potato Chips due to potential undeclared milk ingredients.
