Toyota's Design Team Took a Page From Ford For New Tundra

The popular "Built Ford Tough" slogan has been a staple of the best-selling truck brand in America since 1998. As the country's best-selling truck manufacturer, Ford often sets industry standards and its latest F-Series is no exception.

When developing the next generation of Tundra, Toyota borrowed the "tough" theme and used it as inspiration for each trim of the 2022 Toyota Tundra.

When Toyota's California-based Calty Design Research team was tasked with redesigning the style of the Tundra from the ground up a half-decade ago, they set out to portray that theme in every trim level in the Tundra lineup while allowing each model to maintain its own identity.

Before finalizing the design, Toyota polled existing Tundra customers to find out what they wanted in the new model.

Three grades of the "tough" truck that also embody Toyota's version of luxury are the Tundra 1794, Tundra Platinum and Tundra Capstone, which is a fresh addition to the lineup for the new generation.

The 1794 trim level was named after the founding year of a large Texas cattle ranch in San Antonio that is currently the site of the Toyota plant that assembles the Tundra. For this reason, Calty assigned "Western tough" to this model, according to Kevin Hunter, president of Calty, filling it with natural materials and ranch-ready styling.

Opening the door to the Tundra 1794 reveals a cowboy lifestyle theme complete with saddle brown premium leather-trimmed seating that features embossed leather and Ultrasuede accents. This is complemented by wood accents on the shift console, the front and rear door trim and the instrument panel. A 1794 Edition tag is stamped into the passenger side of the dashboard.

The theme for Tundra Platinum was "classic tough". To achieve this aesthetic and capability the model comes equipped with an upgraded tow package and a center console that doubles as a workbench. Where the Ford F-150 sports a single flat surface that folds out from the extended center console, the Tundra has a dual-level raised surface with three storage compartments inside.

Standard luxury features in this trim include a 12-way power driver's seat with memory and a four-way power passenger's seat with heating and ventilation functionality; 12-speaker Premium JBL Audio system; power moonroof; and a bevy of safety and driver assist technologies.

The top-tier 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone was designed to be "exclusive tough". Borrowing from both the Platinum and the 1794, the fully-loaded Capstone's top spot in the lineup is apparent inside and out thanks to materials choices.

The cabin features soft, high-quality leather throughout the cabin that is complemented by open pore walnut wood accents in an attractive design that doesn't break out of the Tundra mold.

When choosing materials for the cabin of the Tundra, the designers paid special attention to long term durability predictions.

All leather seats surfaces are coated with a resin that limits wear for up to eight years in the driver's seat and four in the others.

Maintaining the cabin's look of a luxury well into the model's life cycle was also important to Toyota buyers. The aforementioned coating on the seats that limits wear also allows for easy cleaning.

The Tundra Capstone's cabin comes fully-loaded with the latest Toyota technology, from a rearview camera mirror instead of the standard mirror to a wireless smartphone charger and birds eye view camera tech.

Voice activated controls rely on the "Hey Toyota" signal to allow for hands-free operation of infotainment and climate settings in addition to texting and calling functionality.
