Transfer News: Chelsea Receive $131m Bid from Real Madrid for Courtois and Willian

The Premier League season is just 10 days away and there's no shortage of clubs still needing to complete their business before the transfer window shuts on August 9.

Here, Newsweek guides through all the rumors and gossip swirling around the league.

Let's begin with Chelsea, who have reportedly received a $131 million offer from Real Madrid for Thibaut Courtois and Willian, as reported by The Sun. The 13-time European Cup winners have been longstanding admirers of the Belgian goalkeeper but their interest in Willian is perhaps a little surprising.

The Brazilian was on Barcelona's radar, but Chelsea rebuffed three bids from the Catalans, who have since signed Malcolm from Bordeaux instead.

New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri will have precious little time to assess his squad, with Real set to come knocking again over the next four weeks, as the transfer window for other European leagues closes at the end of August.

Should Courtois and Willian leave, the Blues could turn to Jack Butland and Jordan Pickford to replace the former and to Christian Pulisic to fill the gap left vacant by the latter.

Signing Pickford, however, could prove difficult as The Times reports the England goalkeeper is set to be offered an improved contract by Everton.

The Daily Mirror, meanwhile, suggests Chelsea have entered the race to sign Christian Pulisic. The U.S. starlet has also attracted the interest of Liverpool and Real Madrid but Borussia Dortmund could be willing to sell him for around $85 million, particularly given his contract runs out in 2020.

Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, meanwhile, reports that Chelsea have stepped up their interest in Juventus defender Mattia Caldara. The 24-year-old is considered one of the most promising defenders in Europe but Chelsea might be reluctant to meet the $52.5 million price tag.

Speaking of defenders, Harry Maguire will not force a move away from Leicester City, according to the Daily Mirror. The England international is on Manchester United's radar but the Foxes are determined to keep him and will refuse any bid for him.

The news is unlikely to improve Jose Mourinho's mood, particularly as he is already at loggerheads with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

According to the Daily Mail, the Portuguese is frustrated with Woodward's reluctance to make more funds available this summer, even though he has been vocal about the need to strengthen the squad.

Mourinho, meanwhile, could soon wave goodbye to Matteo Darmian, with Sky Sports reporting Napoli are keen to bring the right-back to Italy on loan.

Elsewhere, Spanish newspaper Marca claims that Real Madrid will decide whether to sign a big name to replace Cristiano Ronaldo based on how Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema perform in the UEFA Super Cup against Atletico Madrid on August 15.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror claims former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will replace Gennaro Gattuso in charge of AC Milan. The Italian is set to be offered a $7.2 million-a-year-deal but his appointment could be held up by the legal battle he's embarked on against Chelsea, who owe him a $11.8 million payoff.
