Man Celebrating 21st Birthday on Boat Drowns After Falling Overboard

A man who was celebrating his 21st birthday on a boat drowned after he fell overboard into the Miami River, in Florida.

Aspiring fashion designer Trevon Darling, 21, planned a memorable event with friends and family to celebrate his milestone birthday, according to the family.

But, while out on a boat in the Miami River, on Friday, Darling at some point reportedly fell into the water, was unable to make it back on board and drowned.

Officers at the Miami-Dade Police Department told WPLG that Darling jumped off the boat and into the river.

The captain reportedly turned the boat around in order to get back to Darling before some passengers jumped into the river to try to save him or call 911, the network reported.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue divers later pulled Darling from the Miami River before he was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

After Darling arrived at the hospital, he was pronounced dead.

In a post shared on the crowdfunding website GoFundMe, Darling's aunt Tawana Akins appeared to have a different account of what happened in the moments leading up to when he fell into the river.

She said: "Trevon slipped off the yacht into a body of water. Trevon tried to swim back to the yacht."

In the same post, Akins praised her nephew and described him as being a "bright light" who was "self-motivated and driven to be a successful high powered fashion designer."

She added: "We are all devastated by our family's chef, fashion designer and most importantly our loved one.

"Young ladies are still trying to order dresses not knowing our loved one is dead. He was a great person, never in any trouble, and was talented with his hands. We love you Trevon and you will forever be in our hearts."

Darling's mother Lashawna Akins-Taylor told WPLG: "[He] always wanted to make his mom happy. His mom and his siblings [were] his life.

"I'm just stuck with a lot of unanswered questions. I just miss my son. He was my everything."

The GoFundMe page raised more than $7,566 out of a goal of $20,000 as of Tuesday morning.

According to Akins, money raised will go towards funeral costs and she also mentioned Trevon had prepared to fill out insurance paperwork, but that it was never completed.

Detectives are carrying out an investigation into Darling's death.

Newsweek has contacted the Miami-Dade Police Department and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
