Three Men Found Dead In California Cemetery, Murder Investigation Underway

Homicide detectives have opened an investigation after the bodies of three men were found near a grave site at a California cemetery.

Deputies responded to the Perris Valley Cemetery in the 900 block of North Perris Boulevard on Monday after receiving a report of three men unresponsive on the ground, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

KTLA reported witnesses saying they saw the bodies of the dead men before police arrived at around 10.20 a.m. and put up a barrier around the scene.

"One of them was hunched over, the other one was laying down and the other one looked like he... was wrapped up in a sleeping bag type," onlooker Randy Rios told the station. Maria Miranda told KTLA that she saw two of the bodies on top of a grave.

The sheriff's department said on Twitter that the cemetery would remain closed while homicide detectives process the scene.

It was not clear how the men had died, but the sheriff's department said responding deputies arrived and located "three deceased male adults suffering from injuries." They said the victims would not be identified until their families have been notified.

Investigators from the Central Homicide Unit then responded to the cemetery and took over the investigation, the sheriff's department said.

"This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no perceived threat to the public," the sheriff's department added. No other information was immediately released.

However, KTLA reported that police are investigating if the killings may be tied to two deadly shootings that occurred in Perris earlier in February.

Perris Mayor Michael Vargas issued a statement on Monday afternoon, saying he had spoken with law enforcement officials and was monitoring developments in the case.

"On behalf of the Perris City Council, I am heartbroken by the horrific crimes that have taken place today in our hometown of Perris," he said.

"I have been in touch with local law enforcement officials and will continue to monitor developments. Our deepest sympathies lie with the families of the victims of these horrible crimes over the past week in Perris and we are committed to seeing those responsible for these horrific acts brought to justice."

Vargas urged people to be cautious about spreading misinformation and asked anyone with information about the crimes to report them to the sheriff's department.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Investigator Louriero of the Central Homicide Unit at 760-393-3524 or 951-955-2777.
