President Donald Trump strayed from his routine on Thursday and did not take questions from reporters during two White House appearances.
Trump spoke in front of reporters and TV cameras for a Cabinet meeting in the morning, then again later Thursday during an announcement for a new drug addiction initiative.
In an emailed response to Newsweek on Thursday, White House spokeswoman Liz Huston said, “President Trump is the most transparent and accessible President in American history. President Trump takes unrestricted questions from the legacy media and posts directly from his Truth Social account on the most important issues facing our nation every single day.

"The American people have never had a more direct and authentic relationship with a President of the United States than they have with President Trump.”
Why It Matters
While presidents are not required to engage with the press at every appearance, the absence of question‑and‑answer sessions stood out as the administration confronts overlapping policy challenges at home and abroad.
What To Know
White House reporters noted it was unusual for the typically talkative president to refuse questions from the news media.
CNN's Kaitlan Collins posted on X, "For the second time today, Trump declines to take any questions from reporters. Hard to think of a moment in the Trump presidency when that’s happened before."

The lack of question-and-response came as Trump's administration navigated high‑stakes debates over Minnesota immigration enforcement, negotiations involving Russia's war in Ukraine and ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
The decision to avoid questions left unresolved details about the administration’s approach on several fronts, including Trump's response to Thursday's approved funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the future of Venezuela’s oil sector and the scope of U.S. involvement in overseas conflicts.
However, shortly after Thursday's appearance in the Oval Office, Trump posted on Truth Social that he welcomed the new Senate deal on DHS funding ahead of a looming government shutdown.
"Republicans and Democrats in Congress have come together to get the vast majority of the Government funded until September, while at the same time providing an extension to the Department of Homeland Security (including the very important Coast Guard, which we are expanding and rebuilding like never before, [sic]" Trump said on Truth Social.
The deal severs DHS from the core government package and allows funding the agency with a stopgap—for just two weeks—while negotiations over revised ICE protocol forge ahead.
Trump Takes Questions at 'Melania' Screening
Trump left the White House Thursday for a screening of Melania at the Trump-Kennedy Center and took several questions alongside his wife before viewing the film, which follows first lady Melania Trump in the lead-up to her husband's 2025 inauguration.
When asked about the "changing of the guard" in Minnesota's immigration enforcement from Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino to border czar Tom Homan, the president responded, "We have to get rid of the criminals, so from that standpoint nothing is going to change."
He responded to another question by saying that his administration was not pulling back "at all" from Minnesota immigration enforcement.
"We'll do whatever we can to keep our country safe," he said.
