Trump Slams USWNT, Says of Megan Rapinoe: 'The Woman With the Purple Hair Played Terribly'

Former President Donald Trump criticized the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) for being too "woke" to win gold after the soccer team lost to Canada in the semifinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn't woke, they would have won the Gold Medal instead of the Bronze," Trump said in a statement sent through his Save America PAC.

"Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has," he added.

The U.S. team lost to Canada in the semifinals on Monday after a penalty kick beat the Americans 1-0. The U.S. beat Australia 4-3 on Thursday to secure the bronze medal.

Trump also criticized star forward Megan Rapinoe, saying she played "terribly" and referencing her purple hair.

"They should replace the wokesters with Patriots and start winning again," Trump wrote. "The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about Radical Left politics and not doing her job!"

The former president said there were "a few Patriots" on the team but more are needed to make it a gold-medal-winning team.

"There were, however, a few Patriots standing," Trump wrote. "Unfortunately, they need more than that respecting our Country and National Anthem."

The USWNT was crushed by the loss to Canada. The players had their hearts set on becoming the first women's team to win back-to-back titles at the FIFA Women's World Cup and the Olympics. The U.S. beat the Netherlands 2-0 in the 2019 World Cup final.

It was the USWNT's first loss against Canada in 20 years after going undefeated against them in 36 matches dating to 2001, according to ESPN.

"Gutted. Motivated. Together. We have it all to play for," Rapinoe said on Instagram following the loss.

Teammate Alex Morgan shared Rapinoe's sentiment on Twitter.

"Devastated to say the least not to be competing for a gold medal, but hungry for more and thankful we get to compete for bronze in 2 days. Thank you everyone for the support," Morgan wrote.

Rapinoe, Morgan and the rest of the USWNT came back to Kashima Stadium on Thursday to battle for bronze. Rapinoe scored two goals in the victory over Australia.

Forward Carli Lloyd scored the other two U.S. goals, giving her the most Olympic goals in USWNT history. Lloyd has scored in every Olympic match she has played in, bringing her total goal count to 10, according to the team.

"May not have been the color we came for, but every medal means something," the USWNT said in an Instagram post. "Dug deep and got it done."

Newsweek reached out to the USWNT for comment but did not hear back by publication time.
