#Trump2020Landslide Trends on Twitter After Pelosi Announces Impeachment Inquiry—But President's Critics Blame Russian Bots

President Donald Trump may have enjoyed his favorite social media platform even more than usual in the past 12 hours, as #Trump2020Landslide started trending on Twitter.

It came after a challenging day for the president, as Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump over allegations that he asked Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate Democrat Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

As the hashtag was widely shared by his supporters, Twitter users who oppose Trump also got in on the action—sharing their thoughts on why the president wouldn't be celebrating a landslide victory next year and suggesting that the hashtag may not have been started by genuine Trump fans.

"To All of My MAGA Patriot Brothers & Sisters, Today We Have Witnessed The Total DEMISE & DESTRUCTION of the Democratic Party. Our Great President Donald J. Trump Will NEVER Be Impeached. GOD Is In FULL CONTROL! @realDonaldTrump Will WIN RE-ELECTION #Trump2020LandslideVictory," conservative radio host Larry Gaiters tweeted.

"I was fired up b4 to re-elect @realDonaldTrum, but now I'm even more fired up to get him elected in 2020! I will do everything in my power to register voters and get him elected in 2020!! #Trump2020LandslideVictory," @DBZDoll wrote.

The opening of formal impeachment hearings, announced by Pelosi, was, unsurprisingly, widely discussed under the hashtag, with anti-Trump Twitter users pointing out that the hashtag had come at a perfect time for the president and suggesting the involvement of Russian bots, while Trump supporters slammed the speaker for her decision and suggested that an inquiry would only galvanize Trump's base.

Indeed, the president's own 2020 campaign saw the inquiry announcement as a fundraising opportunity—sending out an email to supporters asking them to donate $45 to the cause.

"To fight back, President Trump is launching the Official Impeachment Defense Task Force," an email from the campaign said. "This task force will be made up of only President Trump's most LOYAL supporters," it added, asking people to donate what they could, with a suggested amount of $45.

"Oh Russia bots #Trump2020LandslideVictory is never going to happen," twitter user Jonathan Jewel wrote. "Tell Putin he's about to lose his Russian asset."

"There WILL be a #Trump2020LandslideVictory because the Democrats launched an impeachment inquiry before seeing any actual evidence of wrongdoing. Bad move, guys," user Daniel K.Driskill said.

For his part, the president responded to Pelosi's announcement—which came on the heels of the Ukraine whistleblower allegations and following enormous pressure from more than 100 Democrats—by tweeting about it and slamming the speaker's decision.

"They never even saw the transcript of the call. A total Witch Hunt!," Trump wrote of the Ukraine allegations, adding that the inquiry was "Presidential harassment."

His supporters clearly feel the same, with one commenting that Pelosi had just assured a Trump landslide victory, and another suggesting that the impeachment inquiry was a way for Democrats to cover up corruption within their own party.
