Trump's Approval Rating Rose Significantly in Past Month, New Poll Finds, but His Popularity Is Still Relatively Low

Donald Trump is famously obsessed with his ratings—both TV viewership numbers and his popularity among voters—and, with that in mind, the president got a bit of news he'd likely appreciate this week.

The latest survey from CNN released Monday evening found Trump's approval rating had jumped up to 42 percent, a significant improvement for the president, who has remained largely unpopular his entire tenure in the White House. The March survey from CNN found Trump's support levels were higher than they had been since about the 100-day mark of the former reality-TV star's presidency, some 11 months ago.

In just one month, Trump's approval rating rose 7 percentage points, according to CNN. Its survey, taken from February 20 through February 23, pegged his approval rating at just 35 percent, his lowest level of support yet. The latest survey, conducted from March 22 through March 25, also found Trump's disapproval rating had fallen in the last month, from 58 percent to 54 percent.

The CNN poll interviewed 1,014 respondents over the phone and had margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.

Another recent survey found Trump's popularity had risen in the past month. The American Research Group found the president's approval rating stood at 39 percent in a poll released last week, a 3 percentage point rise from the month prior.

While Trump has seen his approval rating climb in recent weeks, he's still relatively unpopular overall. A tracker of his average approval rating from the data-focused website FiveThirtyEight—which aggregates public polls and adjusts for a survey's quality, recency, sample size and partisan lean—pegged Trump's approval at 41.1 percent Tuesday morning. Compared with his predecessors dating back to former President Harry Truman, no other president had such a low approval rating on Day 431 of their presidency.
