'Turning Red' Release Date: Where to Watch the Pixar Film Online and Will It Go to Cinema?

Pixar's next release Turning Red is a thrilling coming-of-age comedy about finding your path in life.

Set in Toronto, the movie follows a 13-year-old Chinese Canadian girl, Meilin Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang), as she comes into possession of an ancient ancestral power that makes her turn into a giant red panda whenever she feels a strong emotion.

Here is everything you need to know about the film, including where and when it will be available to stream.

When Will 'Turning Red' Be Available on Streaming?

Turning Red will be released on Disney+, following in the footsteps of Pixar movies Luca and Soul.

The decision to give the film a direct-to-digital release was announced on January 7, with the decision attributed to rising cases of the Omnicron variant of COVID-19.

Kareem Daniel, chairman of the media and entertainment distribution division at Disney, said in a statement: "Disney+ subscribers around the world enthusiastically embraced Pixar's Academy Award-winning Soul and the critically acclaimed Luca when they premiered exclusively on the service and we look forward to bringing them Pixar's next incredible feature film Turning Red."

Turning Red will be released on the streaming platform on Friday, March 11.

Pixar employees have expressed disappointment over the decision not to give the film a theatrical release.

In an interview with Insider, a Pixar staff member who wished to remain anonymous said: "It's safe to say that we're all feeling extremely disappointed. Until today, we all thought Turning Red would be our return to the big screen, and everyone at the studio was so excited about it being this film in particular. It was quite a blow."

Another employee of the animation studio told the news site the decision was a "shock."

Will 'Turning Red' Be Released in Theaters?

Turning Red will have a limited theatrical run in the U.S. at a Disney-owned theater in Hollywood. The El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard will show the movie for one week only, from March 11 to 17.

The El Capitan posted on Twitter: "O-M-G! Disney and Pixar's #TurningRed will have a limited one-week engagement at the El Capitan Theatre starting March 11!"

Outside the U.S. the film will be given a theatrical release only in territories where Disney+ is not yet available, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Disney+ is currently available in 64 countries including Canada and the United Kingdom.

Territories such as the United Arab Emirates, Hungary and the Philippines will release the film in theaters, according to IMDb.
