U.S. Open 2021: Round 1 Leaderboard, Projected Cut Line, Friday Tee Times
Russell Henley and Louis Oosthuizen share the lead at the U.S. Open, after the first round at Torrey Pines, California, was suspended because of darkness.
Making his first visit at the San Diego venue since he missed the cut by six strokes at the Farmers Insurance Open seven years ago, Henley carded a 4-under 67, which included three birdies on the back nine. Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open winner and a runner-up in the PGA Championship in May, joined him atop of the leaderboard even though he played only 16 holes.
The South African was among the 36 players who paid the price for a 90-minute delay due to fog at the start, meaning their opening round was cut short as darkness descended on the South Course.
The group will play their final two holes from the first round on Friday morning, before heading straight into the second round.
Francesco Molinari, the 2018 British Open champion, and Rafa Cabrera-Bello are one shot behind the opening duo, while six players are a shot further adrift after carding a 2-under 69 in the opening round.
They include 4-time major winner Brooks Koepka, reigning Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Schauffele and world No. 3 and bookmakers' favorite Jon Rahm.
"Any time in a U.S. Open you're under par it's a great start and today was just that," Rahm told ESPN.
Fresh from finishing runner-up to Phil Mickelson at the PGA Championship in May, Koepka confirmed his pedigree as one of the most consistent performers in the four majors.
While some his rivals struggled—Mickelson finished 4-over par, while three-time major winner Jordan Spieth shot a 5-over 76—Koepka was typically solid.
"It's pretty simple. It's a lot simpler than what guys make it," he told NBC after his opening round. "I think a lot of guys make it more difficult than it needs to be. Just got to understand where the flag is, what you're doing and where to miss it."
Among those who found life harder than Koepka was his nemesis, Bryson DeChambeau. The defending champion finished with a 2-over 73, which could have been far worse had it not been for two birdies in the last five holes.

Projected cut line
The top 60 players on the leaderboard after 36 holes automatically qualify for the final rounds at the U.S. Open, which has the second-strictest cut rule of all the four majors.
The top 70 players and ties after rounds qualify for the final two rounds at the PGA Championship and The British Open, while only the top 50 players plus ties progressing to the final two rounds at The Masters.
In practical terms, that means this year's 156-player field will be more almost halved come the end of the second round on Friday evening.
The cut line is projected to be 1-over par, with 96 players currently on track to miss the cut at the of the end of the second round.
They include the last two winners of the PGA Championship, Collin Morikawa and Phil Mickelson, who both shot 4-over par on Thursday and Jordan Spieth, who finished the first round at 5-over.
