The Very Rich First Family: In Washington, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner Pay $15K a Month in Rent

Washington's hottest young power couple is also one of its wealthiest. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who both recently took unpaid jobs working for President Donald Trump, are paying $15,000 in monthly rent for their new home in Washington, D.C.

The young couple lives in Washington's elite Kalorama neighborhood near former President Barack Obama and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Their landlord is Andrónico Luksic, a Chilean magnate whose mining company is locked in a showdown with the U.S. government over a proposed copper and nickel mine in Minnesota that could be worth billions of dollars, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Luksic, one of Chile's wealthiest men, purchased the six-bedroom home last year for $5.5 million, but he soon rented it out to the Kushner family. While their rent may sound like a lot of money—a one-bedroom apartment in Washington tends to go for $2,000 a month—Ivanka Trump and her husband actually got a surprisingly good deal for their posh new neighborhood.

They are "getting use of a $5.5 million home for far less than it normally costs to have a home of that value," Joshua Adler, who owns multiple rental properties in Washington, told The Wall Street Journal.

A White House spokeswoman said the family was paying "fair market value" for the property. And it's not as though Kushner or the first daughter need help from the president when it comes to paying the rent. The couple have assets valued at up to $700 million, financial disclosures made public Friday showed. Both are the children of powerful real estate titans.

Kushner and Ivanka Trump moved from New York City to Washington in January when her father became president. Kushner is a White House senior adviser, while Ivanka Trump is an assistant to the president.
