One of Donald Trump's most vociferous champions has turned on the president, accusing him of cosying up to corporate CEOs who are trying to "destroy him and his policies."

Fox Business host Lou Dobbs was critical of the meeting Trump held on Wednesday with the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board, comprising of business big hitters like Apple chief Tim Cook and the head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Tom Donohue.

The board is chaired by Trump's daughter Ivanka and commerce secretary Wilbur Ross and is focused on issues like lowering unemployment and preparing for the shift toward automation and artificial intelligence in the workplace.

But Dobbs was rankled by the statement by Trump that companies could grow if more workers were allowed into the country.

He said such a policy would be a "a catastrophe for the working men and women, small business and entrepreneurs, our middle class... the very people this president has represented from the moment he announced he would run for the presidency," Mediaite reported.

Axios reported that this showed Dobbs is worried that Trump might switch from trying to cut legal immigration to increasing it.

Dobbs said that the presence of Donohue at the meeting was "impossible to misinterpret," describing him as an "enemy" of the administration because of his desire to lower rising labor costs.

"In what should have been a reminder to the president's counselors that in politics as in life it is important to never forget who your friends are," Dobbs said.

"If this White House thinks that listening to the beguiling prattle of Tim Cook, Tom Donohue,.. is helpful to this president, then the battle of the forgotten man and woman in this country will be decided by the very establishment that the president ran against."

Dobbs finished by urging people to take their concerns about this direction of the White House to their representatives.

He said it was significant that Trump was keen to "advance the interest of the globalist elites ahead of our citizens," on the same day that the Commerce Department reported the biggest trade deficit in U.S. history.

"It all means the White House has simply lost its way and that the nation's heart will be, after all, broken by the very same people who brought 50 years of consecutive trade deficit and the export of millions of middle class jobs and who have fed the swamp for decades," Dobbs added.

Axios pointed out how another Trump defender, Matt Drudge, also took aim at the meeting, using the banner "swamped" over a Washington Post story about how the White House administration was on a "pronounced losing streak over the past week."

"Trump is losing ground on top priorities to curb illegal immigration, cut the trade deficit and blunt North Korea's nuclear threat setbacks that complicate his planned reelection message as a can-do president who is making historic progress," the Post reported.
