Asked what he would say to her and her new husband if they were watching, the 74-year-old replied: “I love you very much, you’re my daughter and I’d really like to hear from you.” With his voice appearing to shake with emotion for a moment, he continued: “Whatever differences or problems we have we should be able to work them out. We’re family. So, please reach out to me.”

Markle went on to say that he had tried to readh his daughter for several weeks, including by sending texts and writing letters, according to London's Evening Standard . He said he had also not heard from the duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who attended the couple’s wedding in the U.K. capital.

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan went on to quiz Markle on whether he felt his daughter’s new status as a member of the British royal family had “created a huge barrier" between them.

Markle, who could not attend his daughter’s wedding to the sixth in line to the British throne because of health problems, said “yes,” adding “there has to be a place for me.”

In his first TV interview since Kensington Palace announced in October that the duke and duchess of Sussex were expecting their first child, the retired Hollywood lighting director said: “I’m her father. And I will be the grandfather to her children.”

Reaching out to Queen Elizabeth II—with whom Meghan is expected to spend Christmas—the 74-year-old said he would “appreciate” anything she could do to “resolve the family problems.

“All families royal or otherwise are the same and they should all be together. Certainly around the holidays,” said Markle, who is believed not to have met Prince Harry.

Brushing off Morgan’s suggestion that his daughter was rude—citing reports she and Catherine, the duchess of Cambridge do not get on—Markle described his daughter as “controlling," Sky News reported.

"I don't believe them [the reports of the rift]. I think they're gossip. Meghan has never been rude to anyone. She learned to respect everyone.

"She's always been a very controlling person and that's part of her nature, but she's never been rude,” he said.

He added he was “hopeful” the rift would be mended, adding “this can’t continue forever.”

This is the latest interview Markle has given about his relationship with his daughter and her new family. In August, he claimed he hung up on Prince Harry during a phone call.

He told British newspaper the Mail on Sunday that he admitted to staging paparazzi photographs before his daughter's wedding. Markle claimed he told the prince “Maybe it would be better for you guys if I was dead...then you could pretend to be sad," before hanging up.
