Video Shows American Airlines Passenger Duct-Taped to Chair After Trying to Open Door

An American Airlines passenger had to be subdued to her seat during a scheduled flight from Dallas-Fort Worth Texas to Charlotte, North Carolina last week. A recent Tik-Tok video shows the woman restrained using duct tape after she attempted to open the plane's door during the flight. The woman reportedly started biting and spitting on an anonymous flight attendant who was trying to help at the time.

American Airlines issues a statement regarding the incident.

"While in flight from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Charlotte (CLT) on July 6, the crew onboard American Airlines flight 1774 reported a potential security concern after a customer attempted to open the forward boarding door and physically assaulted, bit, and caused injury to a flight attendant," said a company spokesperson.

"For the safety and security of other customers and our crew, the individual was restrained until the flight landed at CLT and could be met by law enforcement and emergency personnel," the statement continued.

Once the plane, which had 190 members on board, landed safely at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, the woman was transferred to a local hospital for evaluation. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were also on hand to escort the woman as well.

In an additional statement to The Charlotte Observer, American Airlines said that it's "typically physically impossible" to open a plane door mid-flight due to the intense difference of pressure inside and outside of the plane.

A now-deleted video of the woman was also posted by Tik Tok user @lol.ariee. She spoke about the incident as it was taking place.

"Flight attendants began turning on the lights around 1:30 a.m. and we see all flight attendants running up and down the aisles, frantically kind of like whispering to each other," @lol.ariee said. "The plane's crew began locking bathrooms, grabbing bags from overhead bins, and wouldn't say what was happening. It was just kind of like chaos and no one knows what's going on."

"Just as the plane was about to land, a flight attendant who sat near them explained that a woman with an apparent mental issue had an outburst and like, had the urge to get off the plane. And she was saying, 'I need to get off this plane,' and she went up to the exits and started banging on the doors, saying, You need to let me off this plane," she continued.

Newsweek reached out to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for further comment but did not hear back in time for publication.
