Video Shows SUV Reportedly Involved in Hit-and-Run Crash Into Fountain

A video released by police in Pennsylvania showed a car speeding through a town square and landing in a fountain during an incident that took place early Thursday morning.

The footage showed the SUV moving at a fast rate of speed and heading directly for the fountain in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. It then breaks through a barrier, and briefly travels through the air before crashing down and stopping in the fountain. The video showed that the front of the car was smashed following the incident.

The crash occurred just before 3 a.m. on Thursday morning, according to Chambersburg Police Department. In an online description of the incident, the department said that the vehicle struck and damaged the fountain in the town's Memorial Square. Police added that the vehicle in the crash was reported to have been involved in a hit-and-run near a Days Inn.

"That incident was reported to the PA State Police just prior to this accident. [Pennsylvania State Police] units and [Chambersburg Police Department] units were attempting to locate the vehicle when it was involved in a second accident at the square. [Chambersburg Police Department] units were quickly in the area and began an investigation into the second accident," the description stated.

The driver involved in the accident was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Police said Thursday that the accident was being investigated "as a possible DUI." State police are investigating the separate hit-and-run incident that occurred near the Days Inn. The footage police released following the crash was captured on cameras in downtown Chambersburg.

Newsweek reached out to the Pennsylvania State Police for comment.

According to the Chambersburg Public Opinion, the crash caused significant damage to the fountain, and caused pieces of it, including a statue, to fall off.

The fountain is a memorial for residents of Franklin County, Pennsylvania who were killed during the Civil War, the newspaper reported.

The Borough of Chambersburg told the outlet that the town has been in touch with a company that will evaluate the damage done to the statute following the crash on Thursday.

"The accident occurred only a few hours ago so we don't yet have an estimate on repair costs," Dave Finch, assistant borough manager, told the Chambersburg Public Opinion.
