Tom Wilson lived up to his reputation as one of the hardest players in the NHL by dropping the gloves for a fight less than a minute into a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday night.

When the Washington Capitals met the Penguins in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs last season, Wilson made the headlines for an illegal hit that broke the jaw of Penguins forward Zach Aston-Reese during Game 3.

The hit saw Wilson banned for three games and in his first meeting against the Penguins since the incident he made his presence felt almost immediately.

The Capitals winger came on for his first shift in the opening period and skated straight towards Penguins' defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, before dropping his gloves for a fight. At 6 feet 7 inches, the latter cuts a towering figure but Wilson dropped him with a strong right hand into the face, which left Oleksiak visibly shaken up.

The 25-year-old had to be helped off the ice by Pittsburgh's training staff and did not return in the first period.

Following the incident in May, Oleksiak had challenged Wilson for retribution immediately after his hit on Aston-Reese, a request the latter swiftly turned down.

In the eyes of Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford, Wilson's decision not to confront Oleksiak proved he was only happy to fight on his own terms.

"When Jamie challenged Wilson, he couldn't run quick enough to get away from him," Rutherford told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in May. "Until, of course, the referees get in close, then [Wilson] comes back and says something to him."

Wilson was suspended for the rest of the series in May and sat out the first two meetings between the teams this season as a result of a different incident. However, those who thought ill feelings might have been forgotten were in for a shock.

"They don't like us, we don't like them," Wilson was quoted as saying by CBS Sports after the game. "There's your quote."

The Canadian, who picked up four suspensions since the beginning of the 2017-18 preseason, was on the receiving end of a huge hit earlier this month when he was nailed by Vegas Golden Knights' Ryan Reaves late in the second period.

Wilson had just played the puck ahead and was not facing Reaves, who ferociously blindsided him, causing Wilson's helmet to pop off as he landed face-first on the ice.

The Penguins, however, had the last laugh on Wednesday night as they secured a 2-1 win, with goals from Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust cancelling out Lars Eller's opener.

The win saw Pittsburgh move up to fourth in the Metropolitan Division with 38 points, five behind the Capitals, who lead the division.
