5 Shows to Watch If You Like 'Virgin River'

Sweet Magnolias

Just like Virgin River, Netflix's Sweet Magnolias is based on a series of romance novels.

Written by Sherryl Woods, Sweet Magnolias follows the story of Maddie (played by JoAnna Garcia Swisher) a soon-to-be-divorced mom of three who is trying to keep her life on track after finding out her husband Bill Townsend (Chris Klein) was having an affair with his medical assistant Noreen.

Bill later decided to leave Maddie for Noreen (Jamie Lynn Spears) after she fell pregnant with his baby.

Just as Maddie's world falls apart, she crosses paths with her son's new baseball coach, Cal Maddox (Justin Bruening), turning everything on its head, much like Mel's (Alexandra Breckenridge) encounter with Jack (Martin Henderson) in Virgin River.

The first season of Sweet Magnolia is available to stream on Netflix now with season 2 currently in the works.

This Is Us

If you enjoy the dramatic sitcom vibe of Virgin River, This is Us is a show you will want to get behind.

Like Virgin River, This is Us follows a broad range of characters spread across three generations.

The series jumps between the past and present, following the lives of siblings Kevin, Kate, and Randall (known as the "Big Three"), and their parents Jack and Rebecca Pearson, across different timelines.

Much of the series is set in the present day but flashes back to the past as Kevin, Kate and Randall try to navigate adulthood and find out who they and their family really are.

Season 6 will be the show's last. It is set to air in 2022.

This Is Us airs on NBC and is available to stream on NBC.com and Peacock.

Call the Midwife

BBC's Call the Midwife will appeal to fans of Virgin River who love the series' medical and romantic storylines.

Across the past three seasons of Virgin River, fans have watched Mel, who is a midwife, deliver numerous babies and save the lives of many.

She also uses her skills as a nurse to help other people in the small town.

Call the Midwife is a long-running and award-winning period drama that follows the day-to-day lives of midwives in London during the 1950s and 1960s.

The series not only touches on the work of midwives but also on important social, cultural, and economic issues and introduces the much-loved element of romance.

Call the Midwife is streaming on Netflix now.

Schitt's Creek

Schitt's Creek may not be as dramatic as Virgin River, but it does have the same heartwarming sitcom and feel-good vibes.

The Emmy-winning series follows the lives of the once-wealthy Rose family who lost their entire fortune after their business manager embezzled money from the family company.

Forced to move to the small town of Schitt's Creek, which they once purchased as a joke, the series follows the lives of Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) and Moira Rose (Catherine O'Hara)—along with their adult children, David (Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy) as they adjust to life living in a motel and with each other.

If you're looking for a romance series, Outlander is the one for you.

Like Virgin River, Outlander is also based on a novel series, written by Diana Gabaldon.

Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a married WWII nurse who travels back in time to 1743 Scotland, where she meets Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

The romantic time-traveling series sees Claire and Jamie explore their romance through the ages, with Claire jumping between the 18th century and the present day.

The upcoming sixth season is set during the American Revolution with a season 7 already on the cards.

The first five seasons of Outlander are streaming on Starz now.
