Video of Vladimir Putin Failing to Shake People's Hands Viewed 6M Times

A video compilation that shows Russian President Vladimir Putin having his attempts at a handshake ignored has gone viral on social media.

The video so far has been viewed over 6 million times and has been posted on Reddit as well as other social media platforms like TikTok.

Posted by Reddit user Hayasaka_Best_Girl on March 14, it has over 176,000 upvotes and 5,000 comments.

In the video, Putin can be seen stretching out his hand for handshakes seemingly only to be ignored. The clips also highlighted Putin's reaction and his facial expression after being ignored.

In each instance in the video, Putin is at public events where people are taking photographs.

Each of the events appears to take place before 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic saw a reduction in handshakes, following advice from medical professionals on how to prevent the spread of the disease.

One of the clips from the compilation shows North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un, one of Putin's most prolific international allies, ignoring Putin's handshake. This incident occurred as the two leaders exchanged gifts ahead of talks the two countries were having at a summit in Vladivostok in April 2019.

The compilation closed with Vladimir Putin staring out of a window for a few moments, much to the amusement of those who viewed video.

Comments on the Reddit post joked that being ignored in this fashion was how super villains were made, while they also referred to Russia's recent invasion of Ukraine.

This video comes at a time when it's unclear when the Russian and Ukrainian conflict, that began on February 24, will end.

Western leaders have issued severe sanctions on Russia and companies have pulled operations in the country in hopes of pressuring Putin to call back his military.

Oligarch Mikhail Fridman, the founder of the largest private bank in Russia, Alfa Bank, explained that the sanctions put on Russia by the West, may not be enough to force the invasion to stop.

Fridman and his long-time business partner, Pyotr Aven, were sanctioned by the European Union on March 1.

"The power distance between Mr. Putin and anybody else is like the distance between the Earth and the cosmos, Fridman said.

"To say anything to Putin against the war, for anybody, would be kind of suicide."

Fridman also said he didn't believe the sanctions against him were justified or would result in him being able to sway Putin's decisions regarding Ukraine.

"If the people who are in charge in the EU believe that because of sanctions, I could approach Mr. Putin and tell him to stop the war, and it will work, then I'm afraid we're all in big trouble," he said.
