'The Walking Dead': Why Michonne Leaving Sets Her Up to Appear in the Rick Grimes Spin-Off Movies

The Walking Dead Season 10, Episode 13, which aired on AMC on Sunday, March 22, was the final episode for Michonne (played by Danai Gurira). She spent most of the episode (titled "What We Become") having visions of an alternate past where she never saved Andrea (Laurie Holden), due to Virgil (Kevin Carroll) drugging her food.

The moment from the episode that will have fans the most excited is when Michonne is shown leaving to look for Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), some of whose belongings she finds on Virgil's island. With Grimes due to star in his own series of spin-off movies sometime in the future, this seems like a big sign that one of those movies will see the katana-wielding warrior reunite with Grimes.

In post-episode interviews, Gurira has been coy about whether Michonne will be back in the world of The Walking Dead at some point. For example, she told the New York Times, "All I'll say is, I've been part of The Walking Dead franchise and the Marvel movie franchise, and I've been taught to not talk about things. I'm not saying it is or it isn't happening. But I think it would be very cool to see this world open up in a way that you can do through a movie exploration."

However, her words to TVLine have given fans of the character hope that she will return. She said, "Wherever Michonne's going, she's determined to find him. That's now her mission… Whatever happens, she's going to give it her all."

As fans of one of The Walking Dead's most fearsome warrior know, if Michonne gives her all to a mission, the likelihood is high that she will succeed, suggesting a reunion between the two is imminent.

An episode of The Hollywood Reporter's TV's Top 5 podcast also gave fans hope that Michonne would not be leaving The Walking Dead universe forever.

On that podcast, host Lesley Goldberg said to showrunner Scott Gimple, "she's a movie star after Black Panther, she has to participate in these—she's as big of a draw, if not more so, than Andrew Lincoln at this point."

Gimple replied: "Oh yeah, absolutely. You just laid it out. I would say, even if she happened not to be a movie star, that would be the case."

When exactly Michonne could be re-teaming with Rick Grimes, however, is currently unknown. The proposed trilogy of movies, which are due to get a theatrical release, have not gone into production yet, and it remains to be seen if the huge delays on Hollywood productions caused by coronavirus will mean big delays for the Grimes films and Gurira's return to the franchise.
