Why 'The Walking Dead: The World Beyond' is Ending After Two Seasons

Since The Walking Dead became a global phenomenon, entertainment provider AMC has been keen to expand the universe, commissioning a number a spin-offs.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond follows on from the original, but it has a much shorter shelf-life than its predecessor. While The Walking Dead is on its eleventh season World Beyond will be ending after only two seasons, with the finale airing on Sunday, December 5.

Why is The Walking Dead: World Beyond ending after two seasons?

Unlike other shows in "The Walking Dead" franchise, World Beyond was always intended to only have two seasons.

The show is set ten years after the zombie apocalypse destroyed the world, and it follows four teens as they navigate life during the dark period in human history.

Explaining why he and the writers decided to only make two seasons of World Beyond, showrunner Matthew Negrete told Entertainment Weekly: "The thing about World Beyond, it was always about how can we make this feel different?

"How can we support expectations in a lot of ways? And one of those is not having it necessarily be open-ended."

He added that while they always wanted to keep the show short but sweet, he and the writers had "fallen in love with these characters."

Negrete added: "So, I think for all of us, we feel like we could write these characters forever. But, at the same time, it's nice to be able to approach a series from beginning to end kind of knowing what our ending is going to be and working towards that ending."

The show comes to an end on Sunday, December 5 with the episode "The Last Light", which Negrete wrote alongside Maya Goldsmith and Carson Moore.

What's next in The Walking Dead franchise?

The first sub-season of The Walking Dead's final outing aired between August and October 2021, and the second sub-season will be released from February 20, 2022.

Fear The Walking Dead, meanwhile, is currently on its seventh season, which began airing on AMC on October 17, 2021.

AMC have also got plans for a show called Tales of The Walking Dead, which will be released in 2022, and spin-off focused on characters Darryl and Carol, coming out in 2023.
