'The Walking Dead: World Beyond' Release Date: When Does Spin-Off Air?

Much like zombies, the world of The Walking Dead just never dies and now a trailer for the latest spin-off in the franchise The Walking Dead: World Beyond has arrived.

The spin-off series was supposed to premiere on AMC in the U.S. and Amazon Prime Video in the UK earlier this year, but the date was delayed due to coronavirus pandemic.

Starring Annet Mahendru, Alexa Mansour, Hal Cumpston, Nicolas Cantu, Aliyah Royale, and Nico Tortorella, The Walking Dead: World Beyond takes place ten years after the apocalypse as we know it in the original series begins, and follows on a group of Nebraska-based teens who are the "first generation to come-of-age" in the new world.

According to AMC: "A heroic group of teens sheltered from the dangers of the post-apocalyptic world leave the safety of the only home they have ever known and embark on a cross-country journey to find the one man who can possibly save the world."

The synopsis for the series reads: "A two-season limited series event, The Walking Dead: World Beyond features a heroic group of teens who, sheltered from the dangers of the post-apocalyptic world, receive a message that inspires them to leave the safety of the only home they have ever known and embark on a cross-country journey to save their father—and possibly the world. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever."

When is The Walking Dead: World Beyond released?

The Walking Dead: World Beyond will air on AMC in the U.S. on Sunday, October 4. In the U.K., the series will be released on Amazon Prime Video at the same time.

The series will consist of two 10-episode seasons, no details are known about Season 2 at this point.

On July 24, the cast and creators of The Walking Dead: World Beyond gathered virtually for a Comic-Con@Home panel to share news about the highly-anticipated series with fans.

In terms of how the show relates to the wider TWD canon, Chief Creative Officer Scott M. Gimple references the show's original and beloved protagonist, Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln).

"Rick woke up after a two-week coma to find the world had changed. Well these two sisters (Iris and Hope, played by Royale and Mansour respectively) don't wake up from a coma, but they do wake up from maybe the way they were looking at life. They go out in the world and they discover a new world," he said.

The characters in this show have grown up in the apocalypse, so as showrunner Matt Negrete explained: "They're not ignorant at all. They know how walkers work... in theory, they've never actually done it before."

The Walking Dead: World Beyond airs Sunday, October 4 on AMC.
