“Just woke up black, and knew how to play,” is how Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis explains his musical talent in the first trailer for upcoming biopic Miles Ahead.

Directed and co-written by Cheadle, the film explores the turbulent life and music of the revered jazz musician but is centered around 1979—a time when the trumpeter, battling record labels, his legacy, and personal demons, was trying to resuscitate his dwindling career four years into a self-imposed hiatus.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday, Cheadle promised the film is unlike a stereotypical biopic and instead will depict the unsteady flow of fortunes that characterized the musician's life.

“He was standing on that knife’s edge at that point, and I don’t think he even knew which way it was gonna go,” Cheadle said as he explained why he chose that period in Davis’ life. “Musically and what he did with his art form was amazing to me all the time, for the most part. But for me, as a human and an artist and someone who’s a creative person, what happens when you just stop for five years?”

Miles Ahead will be released in the U.S. on April 1 and in the U.K. on April 22.
