Harry Styles Confirms NSFW Meaning Behind 'Watermelon Sugar' Lyrics

After lengthy speculation, Harry Styles has confirmed his song "Watermelon Sugar" is about more than just fruit—it's about the female orgasm.

The singer cheekily revealed the true meaning of the lyrics behind the song during a recent performance in Nashville, sending the crowd wild.

"Watermelon Sugar" reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart when it was released in May 2020 and it has remained popular ever since thanks to its catchy beat and suggestive lyrics.

What does "Watermelon Sugar" really mean?

During a recent gig in Nashville on his Love On Tour tour, he revealed his true intentions behind the song to the crowd.

As the first few bars of "Watermelon Sugar" played, he teased fans by saying "This song is about—it doesn't really matter what it's about. It's about the sweetness of life."

He then started singing the first few lines, inviting the audience to sing along with him before dropping the bombshell and ending the speculation surrounding the lyrics.

"It's also about the female orgasm but totally different. It's not really relevant.

"So that settles that," he said.

The origins of "Watermelon Sugar"

This isn't the first time the song's lyrics have been questioned. The single was taken from his second studio album Fine Line and also him a Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance.

Styles revealed the origins of the song while performing it during an appearance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series in February 2020. He revealed how he actually wrote it in 2017 while on the Harry Styles: Live on Tour. During a day off in Nashville they wrote a "repetitive" chorus melody and noticed Richard Brautigan's book In Watermelon Sugar was on the table.

Discussing the journey of the song and the initial meaning, he said: "It's probably the longest it's ever taken me to finish a song. We liked it when we wrote it then I really hated it for a long time, then it came back and kept coming back into the mix.

"It's about that initial euphoria of when you start seeing someone or start sleeping with someone and you have that excitement about being around someone," he said.

After Nashville, Styles performed two nights in New York's Madison Square Garden. He'll now continue the tour with 24 more dates, culminating in three shows at The Forum in Inglewood, California on November 17, 19 and 20, 2021.
