Wayne Rooney has been dropped by Manchester United, England, and now appears to be approaching the end of his Old Trafford career.

The Mirror claims Rooney, 30, has a salary that no longer justifies keeping him even as a squad player.

And Jose Mourinho , who was braver than predecessors David Moyes and Louis van Gaal in dropping Rooney from the United first team, will attempt to ship Rooney out next summer.

The club captain's options appear to boil down to two choices, with Major League Soccer (MLS) perhaps the best avenue if he wishes to keep playing a good standard of football. Alongside former English Premier League stars Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, Rooney would be assured of star status as soon as he touched down in the United States.

The Chinese Super League would offer Rooney staggering wages, but the former England captain has already turned down one offer believed to have been from Sven Goran-Eriksson's Shanghai SIPG club.

Rooney's vow is to keep playing for England and keep fighting for his place at Manchester United, though that appears an increasingly forlorn hope.
